About The Project

The Tinway Town Community Bricks Project is a nonprofit initiative designed to empower the residents of Tinway Town, Liberia, through local brick manufacturing. Led by the “It Is Our Time” community group, the project aims to establish a small brick-making factory that produces high-quality, affordable construction materials within the community.

Project Plan

  • Local Brick Production:
Build and operate a small-scale brick factory within Tinway Town to meet the housing needs of local families who currently struggle with the high cost of purchasing and transporting bricks from distant suppliers.

  • Job Creation and Training:
Employ and train at least ten local residents in brick molding, drying, and distribution, providing sustainable livelihoods and skill development.

  • Affordable Pricing:
Sell 4-inch and 6-inch bricks at a reduced rate—₤90 LD (about $0.45 USD) instead of ₤110 LD (about $0.55 USD)—to make homebuilding attainable for all residents.

  • Reinvestment and Community Development:
Reinvest 25% of profits into expanding the factory and another 25% toward constructing a community hall, a long-awaited shared space for education, meetings, and social gatherings.

Economic Empowerment Generates income for ten founding members and additional workers, promoting local entrepreneurship and circulating wealth within the community.
Housing Development Makes building materials affordable and accessible, accelerating the construction of homes and community structures.
Social Impact Creates a cooperative model of shared success—profits fund communal infrastructure like a community hall, directly improving quality of life.

Backstory

In the heart of Tinway Town, Liberia, a small community of about 800 people has long dreamed of building homes they could truly call their own. The residents—fishermen, traders, mothers, and laborers—have always worked hard, yet the rising cost of bricks and transportation has placed durable housing just out of reach. Many families have started building only to stop midway, their unfinished walls standing quietly as reminders of hopes postponed.

It was from this shared struggle that ten determined neighbors came together to form It Is Our Time—a name that reflects both hope and a gentle insistence that their community deserves its chance. Led by Morris W. Charlie, a small business owner in Buchanan City, the group agreed that relying on outside suppliers was no longer sustainable. Instead, they envisioned creating their own brick-making operation right in Tinway Town, giving the community access to affordable materials and the ability to continue building.

The plan is simple in its purpose but bold in its potential: produce quality bricks within the community and offer them at ₤90 LD (about $0.45 USD) instead of the usual ₤110 LD (about $0.55 USD). This difference may seem small from the outside, but for families in Tinway Town, it determines whether a foundation gets completed this year or waits until next.

Even as the project awaits its beginning, the unity behind it is already strong. Members have committed their time, energy, and skills, identifying land that could be used, gathering tools they already own, and outlining a work plan that includes molding, drying, and transporting bricks. They understand the challenges ahead—unpredictable weather, limited resources, and the physical intensity of brickmaking in a rural town—but they also understand what is at stake.

For the people of Tinway Town, this brick project represents more than construction materials. It represents dignity, progress, and the belief that a community can shape its own future one brick at a time. It Is Our Time stands as a testament to neighbors who are ready to transform a dream into something real—starting with the determination to build for themselves what no one else has ever built for them.
