• Tilt is an initiative that channels peer-to-peer changemaking for youth to pursue their visions of social change and innovation to address obstacles in their communities and around the world. Whether it be starting their own ventures in social impact or co-writing policy proposals for governments, Tilt is a hub for youth agency.

About The Project

Tilt plans to work with community leaders, institutions, nonprofits, and businesses to create spaces for youth leadership and engagement. Tilt also plans to create avenues of collaboration for youth with their peers to innovate long-term community solutions that elevate youth perspectives and ideas.

Our intended impact is to progress a reality where youth feel empowered and enabled to make a difference in the world and communities around them. By creating a world where everyone feels empowered to make a difference, we can build networks and pathways that boost changemaking.

Paying it Forward

My hope is that Tilt becomes less of an initiative and more of a shared affirmation that youth need to be part of the conversations and actions that shape communities. As history tells it, youth have taken the forefront of the most pressing issues facing our society today. Whether it be taking lead in marches and demonstrations, or formulating entrepreneurial solutions to societal obstacles, youth participation has slowly become a force to be reckoned with.

Across social, private, and public sectors, I hope that we can construct a world where anyone from anywhere can make any type of difference.

Backstory

My name is Russell Agustin and I am a Junior studying Public Policy and Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Southern California. I got involved with Tilt in the summer of 2021 when I met with Bob Spoer, the Chief Entrepreneur at Ashoka. We discussed the impact youth engagement and agency can have on the health and well-being of a community and how youth need to be put in positions where they feel empowered and validated. Our discussions led to Bob introducing me to some of the facilitators of Tilt: Kara Andrade, Jonah Docter-Loeb, and Tomás Pamponet. Collectively, we facilitated a Tilt Camp in Brazil with around 50 youth changemakers from various regions to build 10 social impact projects. Following Tilt Brazil, I spearheaded a Tilt Camp with university students and the student governments of the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles to start and refine 8 social impact projects that directly address community obstacles across Los Angeles and abroad. Our biggest challenge has been building sustainable partnerships and connecting with executive sponsors to support the funding of projects and the employment of young changemakers. Specific to the youth of marginalized communities, social change work can feel unimportant when it replaces the time youth would normally use to pursue minimum wage jobs to support their lifestyles and families. But, by creating avenues where youth can feel enabled to pursue their visions of social change all while getting paid via stipends, youth are empowered and accounted for.
