Nearly 41% of people in Jalisco, Mexico live in poverty. The urban setting of Jalisco is both a blessing and a curse for families that reside here. While they have electricity, toilets and access to public transportation, the saturated job market in the city of Guadalajara makes it difficult for uneducated adults to find stable employment. The work they do find is often low-paying and physically demanding.
Mexico is one of the most obese countries in the world (surpassing the U.S. in 2012). Drug trafficking has turned cities into war zones and infiltrated every level of state and national politics. Student-teacher ratios are too high in many poor communities, leading to educational shortcomings, children dropping out of school or being denied access to education. Poor education leads to poor life outcomes, and Mexico has one of the highest birth rates in the world among girls ages 15–19.
With five community centers and a dedicated team on-site, Children International is working to create lasting change for the children, youth, and families of these communities. We provide programs in the areas of health, education, life skills, and employment. Our community centers act as safe havens in dangerous neighborhoods where children will find books, computers and toys to keep them learning, entertained and off the streets. We aim to create a world without poverty where every child, family and community is connected, productive and thriving. With your help, we can achieve this.
