• A lot of organizations face challenges in creating standard and quantifiable metrics to accurately reflect on their social impact over time. In efforts to solve the problem, the University of Virginia was instructed by ImpactX to devise a methodology and system that would reflect the impact of climate action NGOs, specifically.

About The Project

Our Five Chosen NGOs tackling climate change were Food and Water Watch, The Nature Conservancy, Clean Air Task Force (CATF), Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and 350.org. 350.org outlines its primary goals to be ending the use of fossil fuels by stopping and banning fossil fuel projects and encouraging cities around the globe to transition to 100% renewable energy. The reported metrics for 350.org included 160 cities that are part of the Association of Small Towns of Ukraine that pledged to transition toward 100% Renewable Energy, 7.6 million people taking action across the world, 6,136 events taking place in 185 countries, mobilized 8,000 people in 24 cities to take to the streets during the Climate Strikes and 14 BIPOC groups funded with $50,000 in grants.

The Nature Conservancy tackles challenges such as climate change, food and water sustainability and biodiversity. The reported metrics are the impact conservation in more than 70 countries and territories, operation of more than 100 marine
conservation projects, more than 400 scientists on staff, protection of more than 125,000,000 acres of land, protection of thousands of miles of rivers using a new framework that brings new policy approaches, working towards closing the nature funding gap by 2030 with a focus on restoring biodiversity and conduct over 600 controlled burns on 100,000 acres of property every year to renew landscapes.

Natural Resources Defense Council works to safeguard the Earth (its people, animals, and plants) against the
worst effects of climate change, cut carbon pollution and expand clean energy. The reported metrics are a $97M legal settlement to examine + replace water lines in Flint, 1100 deaths avoided annually since implementing the heat action plan in Ahmedabad, India, the 184 pages of comments submitted by NRDC and partners debunking attacks on the Clean Air Act, $8M invested in uplifting the former coal town community of Peoria, Illinois, and more than 175 countries that have committed to stronger climate action.

Food & Water Watch fights for all people to have access to safe food and water and a liveable climate. The reported metrics include $1.2 million in advocacy (based on 2018 audited financials) and the introduced 100% renewable energy bills in different states. Clean Air Task Force aims to help safeguard the Earth by catalyzing policy change solutions and developing and deploying climate-protecting technologies. The reported metrics include helping win and defend the U.S. EPA rules reducing coal plant air toxic emissions by 80-96% in 2017 and 20,000+ lives saved per year due to air pollution reductions.

The impact assessment categories are impact focus, financials, transparency, membership and outreach. Impact focus determines the category and impact direction of an NGO (Advocacy vs Direct Services). Financials evaluate financial metrics to determine the sustainability and well-being of the NGO. Transparency assesses how the NGO builds credibility and trust with the community. Membership examines the level of impact through participation within the NGO. Outreach gauges the events and external partnerships that the NGO has.

Our team suggested the prototype to be an App for everyone which includes a Freemium Business Model (Free basic level, premium subscription for more features), a Distinct Search Functionality where one can search by NGO or SGD, a Social Media Platform and Dual Profile Capability (Different profile features for Investors/Companies). An investor/donor profile will show connections,  current, and previous investments featured investments and posts.

Our team suggests that ImpactX should test the recommended methodology. This will be done by sending out assessments to different NGOs, determining and evaluating the validity of scores, refine assessment to accurately reflect impact. ImpactX should also move forward with the app by hiring an app developer, getting the app onto the app store and keeping record of the consumer feedback.

NGO Impact Assessment /10

Name of Organization: _________________________________________________________
Mission Statement:_____________________________________________________________
Available Points: 0.0

NGO scores are guided by the following scale:

Highest levels of predictable and consistent impact (10-9)
High levels of predictable and consistent impact (8-6)
Low levels of predictable and consistent impact (5-3)
Lowest levels of predictable and consistent impact (2-0)
Each NGO is evaluated through the combination of various factors that are used to measure the level and extent of
impact. The overall score is reflected on a scale from 0 to 10. Scores ranging from 0 to 5 signal high volatility in
terms of impact; whereas, scores ranging from 6 to 10 reflect more stable impact levels.

Backstory

Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is a term used to describe a specific business model for nonprofit organizations which operate independently from the government. These companies are usually created to work towards resolving higher-scale social or political issues. While these companies are non-profit, some operate on large budgets and have the ability to create immense impact. Funding typically comes from private donations, membership dues, and grants. NGOs are scalable and can be operated at local, national, or international levels—the NGOs chosen reflect diversity in scalability. For the purposes of this project, the focus was solely on U.S.-based NGOs.

Through this research and ideation, an online assessment and application that will assign point values to an organization’s impact, as well as highlight key impact features on their profiles were created. While there is still work and tests to be done regarding this solution, the provided modifiable framework for assessing an organization’s climate action impact is inarguably the best tool.
